I had always heard the expression but never really truly understood what "putting your head above the parapet" meant until I looked it up. A parapet is a barrier which is an extension of the wall at the edge of a roof, terrace, balcony, walkway or other structure designed to protect you from falling over and hurting yourself.
So while it is there to protect you from all of the potential dangers and risks, if you never put your head above it, you could be missing out on all of the inherent possibilities that could be out there. If you looked above and beyond it, could the opportunities outway all of the risks?
Previously, I was often too scared to put my head above the parapet unless I had pre-approval as I was always too worried about what other people thought. Even if it was something I was genuinely passionate about, I could never quite muster up enough courage. I would always allow other peoples views and opinions to get in the way.
I was always happy enough to talk to my small circle of trusted industry friends and co-workers but never beyond that, but I am now in a position to change that. A good friend once told me that as westerners we "do what we need to do", to "have what we need to have" to be "the person we want to be". So luckily enough for me, I have done what I needed to do, have everything I need to have, to now be the person I want to be.
All the reasons and concerns I had before are no longer there, and most of the people that matter to me, or whose opinions count, all share very similar views. Therefore, it is time for me to put my head about the parapet and try to make a difference to the things that matter to me the most.
Firstly, to put my #then2zen blog out there beyond the small number of friends and family. I know that some people won't like it, and it may not be to everyone's taste, but if one person reads it and it inspires them to make a change, or it resonates with others, then it will be worth it. Secondly, to use my vast experience, and newfound coaching skills to guide other females in the tech industry to gain more confidence and to have a voice.
Finally, to help other female entrepreneurs to build a successful business, be proud of their products or services and to be brave to put their head above the parapet and reach their full potential.
